MAYOR DOUBTS LOAN STATE £70,000 SUBSIDY * ■ OTHER WORK I.N VIEW (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. "It is no use putting a lot oLthings on our loan schedule which will' nob be approved by the ratepayers," said the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, at a meeting of the Wellington City Council when a- discussion arose on "financing the aerodrome at Rongotai and drainage wor'.cs.
He said that the aerodrome would cost the city £70.000. and the drainage would cost £175,000 and the fact that" the rate levy was higher this year and would be higher again next year had to be taken into consideration. ;.'
The Mayor explained that the council had run out of money with which to finish the- Rongotai work, but as a result of negotiations with the' Hon. Bl Semple, the Minister of Public Works) if- had been arranged that the- Government would provide £70,000 on- condition that the ratepayers of Wellington found the other £70,000 needed. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the council to consider what works should be placed on the loan schedule to go before the ratepayers, probably in November. p «
