SATURDAY WORK BAN
WARNING BY MINISTER EMPLOYEES IN TRADES SERVANTS OF THE STATE (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Tradesmen who formerly worked live and a-half d.'ivs a week, hut who have now been awarded Hie live-day week of 40 hours, are warned by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. If. T. Armstrong, that they must not undertake work at their \\-mlo on 'their own account on Saturdays. "A complaint by employers has been made to me that tradesmen, such as plumbers, are doing tins," said the Minister to-day. "By such actions they are taking an unfair advantage of their employers, who have been compelled to restore the cuts and pay for iive days of work a wage equivalent to that of five and a-half days."
The Minister expressed doubt as to whether the complaints were .justified, but indicated that steps would be taken by the Government, to prevent anything of the kind. He mentioned that Government servants had been included in the complaints, and added that they would be treated in the same way in regard to Saturday work as were employees Of private concerns.
