RAILWAY FENCES
REPAIRS PROCEEDING WAIPAOA TO TE KARAKA The repair by the Railway Department of fences on the Gisborne section of the line is proceeding. This work is being done in pursuance of the policy reinstit'ut'ed recently. .During the slump period, the department refused to be responsible for the fences, leaving, the work to the individual farmers, but. following much agitation by the farmers concerned the department' decided to again undertake the maintenance of fences along the line. Recently, the Farmer's Union received a complaint from a member that his railway fences were in a bad state of repair, and the Poverty Bay provincial secretary, Mr. C. Blackburn, wrote to the Minister, the Hon. 1). 0. Sullivan, on the matter. At a meeting of the union's provincial executive this afternoon, a letter was read from the Minister stating that the fences on both sides of the line for a distance of 12 chains between Waipaoa and To Karaka were the only ones requiring urgent attention. The fencing gang was at present working in the vicinity of the fences which required attention, and the necessary repairs would he put in hand at an early date.
