A member of the. -Tauranga Borough Council, Mr. W. McKinnon,- who resigned recently, was returned at ii by* election with a. total of 403 .votes. The Labour candidate, Mr, J. Gilchrist, secured 27-1 votes, and the third candidate, Mr. L. Wnrde, gained 235. About two-thirds of the electors voted. The byelection Was a sequel to certain differences in the Borough Council. A climax tv as reached at a, meeting- two months ago, when there was ligated discussion regarding a legal opinion from the solicitor to the Municipal Association concerning the resignation of Mr. McKinnon, which had been received by the council earlier.
