WAIAPU CLUB MEETS INCREASE IN STAKES LAST YEAR’S PROFIT .0242 Showing a profit of 0242 on the year’s working, the balance sheet of the Waiapu Racing Club was presented at the annual meeting in Ruatoria recently, members expressing satisfaction with the financial position, and endorsing the recommendation of the committee that stakes be increased for the new season’s racing. The meeting was notable for the number of changes in executive positions, resulting from the vacancy caused in the position of patron through the death of the late Mr. K. S. Williams. The vacancy was filled by the promotion of Mr. A. B. Williams from president to patron, and the elevation of Mr. J. H. Tapliu, one of last year’s vice-presidents, to the presidency. Mr. I. S. C. Dalgairns followed Mr. Taplin in the vicepresidency, while Messrs. R. 11. Wicksteed and J. 11. McNeil were re-elected as vice-presidents.

No ballot was necessary for the seats on the committee, the nominations being just sufficient to fill the available seats, as under: Messrs. 11. G. Burnett, B. W. Ford, C. Iv. Williams, J. Arnold, J.' M. Reedy, O. T. Williams, and A. L. Kemp. The newcomers in this list are Messrs. Arnold and Kemp. The list of stewards for the new season comprises Messrs. P. W. Barrett, 11. Boyce, G. E. Cotterill, W. 11, Gray, 11. M. Jackson, R, Kemp, A. J. H. Kirk ham, W. Mcriatchie, M. McMenamin, A. Tuckwcll, B. O. Watkins, J. D. Williams, 11. E. Williams, D. Bruce, 11. Thatcher and T. Snelling. Last year’s stakes payments amounted lo £306, and taxation absorbed £362. Gate receipts totalled £152, and the totalisator profils on flic one-day meeting yielded £636. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, it was decided to offer £4ll in slakes for tho 1937 meeting, the date of which is February 27, all events on the programme having been raised from last year’s stake level.

Mr. A. J. Nicol, Gisborne, is to be asked to submit a scheme for improving the totalisator house at the club’s course, the need for improvement having been pointedly exemplified at the last, race gathering.
