STEWART ISLAND RELIEF
ANSWER TO COMPLAINT PUBLIC WORKS PLANS NEED FOR APPROVAL (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In regard to the complaint of lack of "provision for unemployed in Stewart Island, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. It. Semple, indicated to-day that he had informed the county council on September 14 that until he had sufficient information to enable him to decide on the full merits of a proposal to make a road from Half. Moon Bay to Mason’s Beach, he was not prepared to make financial provision for it. He pointed out that the position of the fishermen could be eased if the council would expedite the submission of the plans and specifications of works for which financial provision already had been made on the estimates.
