WARNING TO MOTORISTS

INTOXICATION CHARGES

THREAT OF GAOL TERMS

Mr. .1. "Millor, S.M.. in fining a 11101 orist £ls ami cancelling his license for 12 months .for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle issued a definite warning yesterday that Snell offences, which had become too numerous in the Hastings district, had to stop, or the court would be compelled to send the offenders to gaol.

“It is my duty lo point out that in this town of Hastings, in little over a week, iliere have been tour .eon.* fictions for this most serious charge of being intoxicated whilst, in charge of a motor-vehicle,” said the magistrate.

“A lot of publicity has been given to the eases of late and the time has eotne when motorists have had ample warning. This ease took place before those four referred to, but- even in a town the size of . Wellington such ■eases are not so frequent as they have been in Hastings. Fines and cancellation of licenses are evidently not enough, and there is only one alternative for the future, and that is to send offenders to prison as a protection to the public. Had this defendant followed on the four, lie would have been differently dealt with to clav. ”

Mr. Millor expressed the remarks when John Franklin was called on to answer a charge of on August 15, at Havelock North, ‘being in charge of a motor vehicle whilst, in a state of intoxication on the llaveloek-Wai-marama road. He was also charged with negligently driving a motor vehicle on the same road -and with driving without, a, driver’s license.
