“This expansion,” declares M. Radek n the Isvcstia, the official newspaper, has been made possible by Italy’s weakened position in Europe. “Italy probably does not realise this .nd thinks that she has brought off a cunning manoeuvre. Italy thinks, by threatening Britain and France with 1 ' an italo-German front, she will facilitate :he return to normal of her relations with Britain.

“Berlin also uses the same bluff Against Britain. So long, however, as Germany hopes to obtain a guarantee of British neutrality in the event, of war with Russia and France, she will not tie herself up with Italy. The moment they achieve their main aim Germany and Italy are ready to betray each other.” The Pravda states: “Italy does not believe that the British lion has forgotten how his ears and tail got pulled. She fears that Britain retreats to strengthen her rear and then hit the Italian Fascists harder.”

Therefore, it is argued, Italy hopes to bring pressure on Britain directly by the threat of an alliance with Germany and indirectly by playing on French fears in the hooe that. France will persuade the British Government to liquidate the Abyssinian feud. ,
