The county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, reported to the county council at its meeting yesterday that steady progress has been made with the preparation of proposals of public works jobs and a. number of this season’s works had been laid off.

“However,” he staled, “owing to the unsettled position as far as the loan balances are concerned, due to the proposed state highway system, the proposals on the Maugapoike Valley road for this season are being held up temporarily.

“Tenders will be called for a number of small jobs shortly, but it is not considered advisable to have any more contracts let until some attempt is made to clear up a good deal of last season’s work which yet remains uncompleted. “The development of the Gentle Annie reconstruction work is at present in abeyance until later «in the season when the weather conditions are more settled and there is less possibility of inconvenience to traffic.”

On the recommendation of the finance committee, it was agreed that work on (ho present contract on Gentle Annie Hill would be commenced by the middle of October, provided (lie weather was satisfactory.
