MINE WORK DISPUTE

COHFEKENCE OF PARTIES

HOPES OF SETTLEMENT

WELLINGTON, last, night, Proposals for the settlement of the recent troubles in the c.oal-miniug industry were made at a conference bc-twoon the owners and miners’ representatives in Wellington to-day, and the delegates have now returned to submit, these to the men.

Until this is done, the result of the conference will not be known, but it was staled to-night that there is every reason to believe that a satisfactory sci demon t, will be made. A stoppage occurred at Huntly on Monday, when the truckers at Rotowaro mine refused to work threequarters of a shift. The stoppage was caused by information of a stopwork meeting which, it is understood, was called to discuss the rates of pay for certain work.

REDUCTION OF HOURS

SOUTHLAND MEN ACT FIVE-DAY WORK WEEK (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, last night. As a result of the employees refus--snp* to work on Saturdays for the pas turn weeks, the King Solomon deep lead mine at Waikaia has been working a live-day week. The men decided to reduce their working hours from 48 to 40 from the beginning of this month and the management of the company declares that their action was taken without consultation with the employers.

Several of the men Mated to-dgy that they had no intention of revertin'-,- to a six-day week of 48 hours. They declared that the manager, had made no comment on their decision not to work on Saturdays and had not approached them to resume Saturday work.
