District road and bridge grants invariably furnish plenty of interest lor country readers .in particular, and this year’s public works estimates, tabled in the House of Representatives yesterday by the lion. For tlie Gisborne road district, comprising the Cook, Waikohu, Matakaoa, Waiapu and Uawa counties, there are provided l votes totalling £61,404 out of the department’s funds for construction and improvement of settlement roads and bridges. Matakaoa has scored well in the distribution of road and bridge grants, receiving a total of £11,500 out of the £61,000 odd voted for the whole district, and practically the v hole of this sum being concentrated ill four individual votes, the main, East Coast roftd between Potaka Junction and Whangaparoa being down for £7OOO In the Cook County there is only one substantial vote, that being £3275 for the Manutuke-Raey Bridge section of the Mangapoike Valley road. Waikolm’s largest grant is £16,180 for the 'L'arndale ■ road, of which the great bulk is free money; while another substantial grant is the £6600 set down for the Rakauroa-Tahora road, all free. On the Mutuera road, the department will find \ £I6OO at £3 for £l, in the same county. Waiapu’s major vote is £4570 for the Tokomaru-Mata road, on the basis of £2 for £1 ; while there arc also £IBOO for the Ihnngia-Mata-Waitahaia road and £I4OO for the Wairongomai [Stream bridge on the Tapnaeroa, road, both on the same basis. "Uawa County is not heavily represented among the votes for the district, the Kiore road being the only one on which any large sum is to be spent, £IBOO being voted for this with the condition that settlers on the road contribute to the work. In the Opotiki County, there are certain votes which interest Poverty Bay travellers, chief of these, being £1235 for the Waioeka Stream bridge on Wairata road. There is a lot of money to be expended in the Wairoa. County, on the other hand, £36.000 being made available for the Waikaremoana-Rotorua road, between Hopuruabine and Ruatabuna; £3420 on the Ngamotu road; £1665 on the Tsugoio-Mohaka road via .the coast; and £ISOO each on the Waireka suspension bridge over the Waiau River, and the 'Whangawehi Stream bridge between Mahia and Table Cape.
