HOLLAND MEMORIAL
MR. R. 0. GROSS’ WORK SYMBOLIC SCULPTURE In his studio at Epsom, Auckland, Mr. R. 0. Gross, the well-known sculptor, is making good progress with the fine|y•coiiceived marble memorial which is to lie placed over the grave of ihe late leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party, Mr. 11. FT Holland. The memorial, which has been iu hand since last, year, will be- about- 12ft. in height, and is being carved from three blocks'of. Carrara marble, imported' with some difficulty from Italy not long before sanctions- were imposed on account of the. war against, Abyssinia. There are three separate pieces, of sculpture, symbolical ol humanity's upward struggle, both spiritual and material, through the ages. . - Surmounting the whole is ihe nude figure of a, young man with face uplifted, holding in one hand flowers and in the other fruits. On either side of tho pedestal is a group of two crouching figures, in attitudes expressing tho material hardships and superstitious fears of primitive mankind. In the hands of the figures are implements typical ol the later stone age. The central figure has now reached an ,advanced stage and the- two groups have been to a large extent roughed out. Mr. Gross has hopes- that the .work may be complete, by Christmas. The present intention is to dedicate the memorial at a large. Labour Party gathering next Faster. .- -.-- -.-. - ■
