ELEPHANT RUNS AWAY
CHILDREN ON BACK FRIGHTENED BY NOISE LONDON, Aug. 1. Nogay Ko, an elephant at. the London Zoo, which has safely carried hundreds on her back round the gardens, suddenly bolted yesterday and provided a few moments of intense, excitement.
Cla frying a load of children and some grown-ups. the. elephant was walking jmsb the Pets’ Corner when the loudspeaker used to advertise the Corner and the photographic, studio blared out. Either this noise or an exposure flash from the studio frightened the elephant, for she started violently, turned round and bolted to the Elephant House along the route she lakes every day after work. She raced along the Broad Walk and through (ho tunnel. The onlookers held their breath, for there was doubt whether the tunnel was high enough to take ail elephant, with a loaded liowdah on her back'.
Fortunately there was just enough space for the children, and the adults had Die presence of mind to duck their heads before the tunnel was entered. Noginv Ko made straight for her own den in Die Elephant House and there she stopped, still trembling with fright. Although her passengers were seared, nobody was hurt. The Gardens were not crowded, and nobody was in Die way of the bolting elephant.
