At Oxley, in the British professional golf championship, the • first round of match play 'resulted : Padgham (holder) beat Williams, "7 and 6;' R. A. Wliitcombe beat Large, 4 and 3; Cox beat. T. Perry, 4 and 3; Cotton beat Adams, at the. 20tli; C. E/.ar beat. Sam King, 3 and 2. , Cotton and Adams had a terrific tight. Cotton went out in 34 to stand two up. Adams squared at the sixteenth. Ho overdrove the green at the 20th, Cotton winning with lour against five.

Ran* is the first American ever to com pete- at this tournament.

WAIROA LADIES

CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED ;Herald Correspondent.) The ladies’ senior championship ot the Wairoa Golf Club, played over 3G holes, was won by Miss Ormond, who met Miss Harrison in the final. Miss Ormond has been playing very consistently during the whole of the season, and has even met with success at several outside competitions. The final of the junior championship also was contested over 30 holes, by Miss Harvey and Miss Buchanan, the former proving the winner. Miss Harvey played brilliantly in the first round, setting lip a lead which Miss Buchanan found impossible to overtake.

Miss Kenny and Miss ('rarer were the finalists in the C division, which, after a well-contested game, was won by Miss Kenny at the nineteenth green. Arrangements arc being made for a team of ladies from Poverty Bay to pay a visit to Wairoa at an early date.
