PRICE OF ORANGES

RATES IN DOMINION. , CHANCE FOR INQUIRY _ CANBERRA, Septr. 15. The New Zealand Government has informed the Commonwealth Department, of Commerce that the scope of the forthcoming fruit industry inquiry will cover the importation of _ fruits from overseas and that Australian interests might submit evidence to the committee, but the committee is mot to . be permitted to consider or comment on the existing fruit embargo. Disappointment is expressed in official circles in Canberra that the embargo against Australian products will not come within the scope of the inquiry. However, it is felt the occasion will provide an opportunity for the submission of information regarding the landing costs of Australian oranges, for which New Zealanders are required to pay prices which are too high. Best oranges at present are selling in the capital cities of Australia at 12 for a shilling and six for a shilling. The latter are extra large, fleshy oranges. To-day navels are quoted at 5s to 10s, and common varieties at os to 7s per case.
