TAPERING OFF

MEN ON NO. 5 SCHEME COOK COUNTY POLICY The policy of tapering off with the No. 5 scheme, as a result of an arrangement with the Labour Department, was described by the county engineer, Air. K. F. Jones, to the Cook County Council to-dav.

“During the past four weeks,” Air. Jones said, “a decrease of 30 men has taken place and a further drop is anticipated during the next month. _ A large number of these men are being absorbed on the railway work, and the Native Department has in many intanees taken over the Maoris at- present employed by the council. “The men generally are working very well, and under the supervision of permanent surfacemen, are producing firstclass jobs. In the main they are carrying out drainage works which would not otherwise be considered, but- which eventually must have a very beneficial effect on" the flats generally.

“It is possible that a start may be made if the weather permits on both Tariiheru and Ngatapa creeks and using the No. 5 scheme labour m the localities concerned. The unmetalled poi - t<ion of Nelson road: which requires a new outfall drain to effect a proper improvement also is being given consideration.”
