Reports of the civil war in Spain state that fighting was continued' on the Iran front early this morning, but the rebels did not show signs of making a big attack. The Government broadcast is more tlnin usually - confident. It claims that the insurgents are -being driven back to the province of Leon and that they have suffered heavy losses in the Asturias and in the vicinity of Oviedo, to which city three insurgent columns were marching. A rebel bomber flew over Madrid in the * early 'hours of the ' morning, but did not drop bombs. The arrival of the first Russian Ambassador in Madrid since 1914 Ms welcomed as indicating the Soviet s sympathy with the Government. The Spanish Ambassador at London has resigned. A message from Rome states that Italy has applied the arms embargo against -Spain, including all contracts m the course of execution. FEARS OF FAMINE COUNTRY STRIPPED BARE NO CROPS BEING SOWN LONDON, Aug. 28. The Casablanca correspondent of The Times cites the opinion of a competent French observer who made a hazardous journey afoot to the centre of Spain that the -Government, would be defeated by famine. It is said that the large farmers are cither fighting or patrolling thencattle which are being slaughtered in many areas. Nothing, is being sown and the crops are being abandoned. The country round Madrid is stripped bare and it is suggested that if the railway from Valencia is cut, the capital will quickly starve. NON-INTERVENTION URGE LABOUR PARTY SUPPORT (Reed. Aug. 29, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 28. A joint conference of the Labour Party and the Trade Union Congress to-day favoured the principle of nonintervention in the Spanish civil war.
