SHOP EARLY PLEA
THE GROCERS’ SATURDAY
EFFECT OF NEW HOURS
Because of the noon closing on Saturdays grocers* shops in Gisborne will have difficulty in dealing with end-of-the-week orders, unless they have the co-operation of the public in early shopping and ordering. The Gisborne Master Grocers’ Association advertises in the Herald to-day that the hours to be observed by its members or. the first- four days of the week will be from 8.45 a.m. until 5.30 p.m., while on Fridays the closing time will be 8 p.m., after opening at the same hour as on the other days. On Saturdays, the grocers will open half an hour earlier, 8.15 a.m., and will close at noon. The hours mentioned will be observed because of the introduction of the 44-hour week for shop assistants, and will commence on Monday.
A review of the effect of the new hours on grocers was given to-day by Mr. John Jackson, secretary of the Gisborne Master Grocers’ Association.
“The shorter hours,” he said, necessitates earlier shopping, and the grocers trust that the public will make an earnest endeavour to shop early and to have their orders in as soon as possible. When the shop closes the man doing his round on the delivery van must cease work at the same moment. Saturday is a short day of 3| hours and customers should place their orders on Friday to ensure delivery on. the Saturday. The grocers desire to keep faith with the public in delivering their goods, but this cannot be done unless they have the co-operation of their customers.”
