GOLD CUP CHANGES HANDS

RUATORIA'S SUCCESS ONE-POINT MARGIN MATAKAOA MISS DOOLE (liuruld Con-Bspondent.) In accordance with the home-aud-home scheme, Matakaoa met Ruatoria in Te Araroa last Saturday for the last Rugby match of the season, the Pepero lioUl Cup being at stake. Ruatona won by one point. A fair crowd attended. The teams were :—Matakaoa.—Maui Waititi, YV. Jensen, Aubrey YValford, C. Chambers, P. Kohere, Ross Wliite, T. W'aliord, H. Huriwai, It, Manuel, P. Pahurn, Raugi Henderson,. R. Poutu, J. ftgnhue, F. Henderson and Honkamau. Ruatbrm.-rP. T. Reedy, D. Hati, W. Tautohe, H. Beach, J. C. Reedy, T. VV. Jackson, L. .McLean. T. McClutcl.it!, A. Manuel, H. Rangitna, K. Gr»-r, l>. ;\lcClutchie. 11. Ku.--.ai, Mita 'J'u.i.<ila, and U. Hati.

.Matakaoa chose to play with the breeze behind them. Waititi, receiving the ball from a kick, took a long kick and running up smartly prevented its return. The ball came out of the scrum and with passing found its way into Jensen's hands. The big winger dashed for the line and brushing aside one or two opponents went over. Although the kick was not an easy one, Poutu converted. This was early in the progress of the game, and matters certainly looked rosy for the local side, but the final result turned out' otherwise. It was apparent Ruatoria were getting the ball out of the scrum every time and Matakaoa were sorely missing their hooker, DooJe. _ This weakness proved Matakaoa's undoing. The defenders kept up their attack and took play into Ruatoria.'s territory and kept it there for a while. Now it was Ruatoria's turn to attack and Waititi relieved with a good kick. Half-time was called with the score standing at Matakaoa 5, Ruatoria nil.

nun Kuaioria playing with the breeze, Matakaoa's hopes did not look too bright. Although tiie pack pushed better there was nc' sting in its play. Early on resuming play Ruatoria penned Matakaoa in their twenty-five. L. Hati snatched up the ball and went over. The kick was not successful. Matakaoa, realising the narrow margin of two points was too precarious, exerted themselves and carried plav into hostile territory. Ruatoria, replied with a counter-attack, but soon Matakaoa were again attacking Ruatoria's line and n. score looked imminent, ait an infringement by Matakaoa gave Ruatoria relief.

Shortly after, Matakaoa once more were attacking and Ruatoria forced. The visitors took control of matters and took plav into midfield and attacked strongly." The ball coming out of the scrum," the Ruatoria backs passed it on to Reach. This fine young winger took the pass and made a dash for the line, which he crossed. The kick again was unsuccessful. The try, however, gave Ruatoria a margin of one, sufficient to win the cup. Mr Whaipooti was the referee.
