HISTORIC PAINTING
RUTHERFORD'S PORTRAIT PRESENTATION TO COLLEGE (Per Press Association.) KELSON, this day. Nelson College Old Boys last year commissioned "Frank Emanuel to paint" a r picture of Lord Rutherford of Nelson",' their most distinqnishod pid boy.
The picture is in oils on a canvas Rutherford'is- shown seated handling about sft long arid 4ft high. Lord a piece of scientific apparatus. Thepainting'Svill be of historic interest, as in the words of Lord Rutherford' himself, "the" apparatus depicted is" the original used by me showing for
the first time the transmutation of nitrogen hy bombarding with swift alpha'-'particles.''' The 'painting -was presented to the college to-day at a crowded gathering in tire assembly hall. Reference was made to Lord'Rutherford's outstandirig" work in the world of science and his continued' close personal interest in his old school. His "example, his greatness, and his unassuming nature Were regarded as a great inspiration to present 'and future scholars.
