RAILWAY PROFIT

JULY PERIOD GAIN IMPROVEMENT OF £30,295 RECOVERY SINCE APRIL 1 An improvement of £30,295 in net revenue for the four-weeklv period ended duly 18, compared with (he result for the' corresponding period last year is shown by the railway working account, an abstract of which has been gazetted. A working profit of £29,632 replaces a loss of £663. For the equivalent period in 1934 there was a. profit of £12,254, and in 1933 a profit of 820-G34. '' , : ' Tho gross revenue' for the four weeks was £508.738, which was £69,330 more than a year ago. Expenses were increased by £39,035 to £479,1CG.

The operating account for the North Island shows a' revenue of £263.042, an increase of -£38.573, and expenses totalling £258,877, an incrcaso of £20,861. There was a profit of £9165 compared with a loss of £8547 last year. The receipts of the South Island railways were £179,372, an increase of £23,628, and expenses were £182.819, an increase of £11.362. There was a working loss of £3147 compared with a loss of £15,713. > The balance of miscellaneous revenue was £23,914, compared with £23,597 in 1935. The revenue was £61,324 and the expenditure £37,410For the period from April 1 to July 18, the net revenue was £339,700, compared with £263,675 last year, an improvement of £76.025. The gross revenue was £2,233,553, an increase of £243,382. The expenditure was £1,893,853, an increase of £167,357.
