NEW HEAD TAKES OVER 30 YEARS OF SERVICE (Per Tress Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The new commissioner of pensions, .Mr. IT. Digby Smith, whose appointment was consequent, on (he selection by Ihe Government of -Mr. .1. 11. Boyes, pensions commissioner for seme years, for the office of Public Service Commissioner, has now taken up his new duties. Educated at the Otago Boys' High School, -Mr. Smith was appointed to a cadetship in the accountants' branch of the General Post, Office in 1906, and became attached to the old age pensions division. Later, lie transferred to the Pensions Department. In 1914-15 he was Registrar of Pensions at Invercargill, 1921-23 registrar at, Wellington, and in 1923 registrar at, Auckland. Mr. Smith, who was selected as assistant-commissioner at Wellington in 1929. had service in Hie Great War. joining with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1915. He served with a commission in the Otago Regiment in Erance and Belgium ami. afterward, with the Army of Occupation in Germany. Like his 'predecessor lie is an experienced angler.
