LEPER ISLAND STRIKE

SUPERINTENDENT BEATEN TROUBLE IN JAPAN (Reed. Aug. 21, noon.) TOKIO, Aug. 20. As a consequence of a beating administered to the superintendent by the lepers who were reported on Wednesday to be hunger-striking in the Government colony on an island in the Inland Sea for better pay, self-goverment and the dismissal of the superintendent, the police doing duty on tile island have been supplied with rubber gloves and masks to enable them to restrain the strikers.

Some of the patients are suffering from refusal of medical treatment. They have puzzled the authorities, who are endeavouring to effect a settlement.
