CROFTING EXPERIMENT

INDUSTRIAL WORKERS LANA RKSHIRE SCHEME (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 10 a.m. RUGBY , Aug. 19. An interesting experiment in crofting is being undertaken in Lanarkshire, Scotland. under the supervision of Professor Scott of the Government agricultural training centre at Carstairs. Fourteen good industrial workers are engaged in tile experiment, and with the aid of a Government grant of £2OOO the crofters are building and stocking workshops for carpentry, shoe-repairing, piggeries, cowsheds and poultry runs.

In return for their labour, they receive coupons, 10 units being allowed for a working hour. The coupons are exchangeable, at a fixed rate, for the produce of the fommuiiity. The men will receive full allowance from the labour exchange until the scheme is self-support-
