£280,000 PROVIDED WORK FOR 2500 MEN SYDNEY, Aug. 8. The Government lias provided the Railway Department with ,1190,000 lo enable an immediate start to be made with the construction of a railway iron) Croimlla. to Sutherland, which is estimated to eost £414,000. The Government is also making £190.000 available towards the eost ol constructing the eross-eonniry line from iMnryvalc. on the western line, to Sandy Hollow, on the Mnswellbrook-Merriwa brand',. A permanent survey of the MaryvaleSandy Hollow route, which is about 150 miles, is proceeding. The railway engineers esliinnle. that ihey will have 900 men on the job by I lie beginning of next, year, and that that number will be increased lo 2000.

As if is expected thai 200 men will be at. work within a month on the (.'rounllaSutlierlaml railway, and 500 by Ibe end of the year, the Government s action will provide work on both lines lor 2900 men.
