ARTIST AND ARTISAN

NO LONGER POLES APART SYDNEY, .Tuly 29. The acting Minister for Education, Mr. Hawkins, at the annual distribution of prizes at the Woollongong Technical College last night, said that in past years artists and artisans were considered lo be poles apart, but today many who commenced as artisans could become artists. Technical education, he said, gave a man the chance to develop the highest and richest in his character, and endeavoured to assist the worker to get "out of his groove. It also tried to teach him to think and understand the other man’s point of view.

Mr. A. W. Hicks, Superintendent of Technical Education, said that there was a greater demand for skilled workmen and tradesmen to-day than 20 years ago. Nowadays a man was not considered a skilled workman unless he could read plans and specifications,- which wore becoming more and more involved every day.
