RELIEF OF DISTRESS A total of 822 licenses for raffles and art unions was issued during the year ended March 31 last, according to the annual report of the Department of Internal Affairs tabled in the House of Representatives. Of these, 530 were for works of art, 281 for'small amounts of alluvial gold, two for alluvial gold to the value of £IOOO in aid of territorial for'ce associations in Wellington arid Canterbury. and nine for alluvial gold valued at £SOOO. These nine showed an aggregate net profit of £47,245, out 'of gross sales totalling £157,763. Of the net profits, £41,725 was distributed for the relief of distress through various mayoral and other recognised relief funds, making a total of £IBO,OOO set aside for this purpose during the past three and a-half years.
