LENGTH ON THE LINKS .DALLEMAGNE’S SECRET LONDON, July 3. The problem of length on the links—far more fascinating to golfers than the more useful art of saving strokes on the green —is raised again by the spectacular achievement of Marcel Dallemagne in (he French open championship. JJallcmagne is the most consistently long hitter in the world. On ordinarily soft turf, without the aid of wind or slope, he can drive about 300yds. The average strong scratch player can drive about 220. a Sarazen or a Padgham about 260.

So terrific was Dallemagne’s driving at Hoylake, the world’s longest course, that he went round more than once without needing a wooden club for his second shot. He can out-distance even such a remarkable driver as Cotton, with whom he played off yesterday, by some 30yds. His secret nobody knows. About 40 years old, he is a muscular man of perhaps 6ft., not nearly so powerful-looking as Cox or many another fine player whom he can leave standing.

Speaking in Christchurch recently, Gene Sarazen, the famous golfer, said he would much like to play in Ihe New Zealand open championship and probably would time his next visit to the Dominion to coincide with that event. On his present trip to Australia he will be playing m the open championship and the Adelaide centenary open championship.
