OBITUARY

MIL 1L 11. TROTTER

Old residents of Poverty Bay will regret to learn of the death recently ol Mr. Hi. H. (Tom) Trotter at Marlon. The late Mr. Trotter arrived in Napier in 1874 at the age of 14 years and became a cadet on liissington station, lie remained there for a number ol years before coining io Gisborne.

Deceased took up I'arming in Poverty Bay and was well known among the vounger men as a keen sport- and lootbnller. In the early ’eighties he was a Hawke’s Bay Rugby representative and was ehosen in 1885 as one ol the pakehas to tour England with the Maori team, but he declined to make the trip. With the second contingent, the late Mr. Trotter went to the South African War and was sent hack wounded. He returned later and rose to the rank ed captain. When the Western Australian gold rush stal led he crossed I lie ’lasnian and when he returned to Gisborne lour years later be married the fourth daughter of Mr. W. Avenell, Auckland.

Deceased managed properties on the Wanganui River, and at Pahiatua, and lie took over Suntoft station al Marlon in 1913. lie retired in 1931 and went, to live at Paraparaumii. A sportsman of genial personality, lie was. lor many years a steward of the Poverty Bay r l u-rf Club and later the Marlon Jockey Club.
