Wireless Now 40 Years Old
LONDON, June I. TO-AIORROW marks the fortieth anniversary of a notable date in wireless history. On June 2, 189(5, Guglielmo Marconi filed the application tor his first patent. It described the use of a “sensitive tube receiver, or coherer," connected to an earth and elevated aerial. The aerial, which now has successors numbered by the million throughout the world, is regarded as fho essence of his invention. Tuning was also described in the patent. (Since then nearly 800 patents have been granted to Mtirehe.se Marconi, oi Lis companies. Forty years ago lie had just demonstrated his invention to Sii William Preece, chief engineer of the Post Qflice, over a distance of 100yds, from the roof of the General Bos' Ollice. The Fnglish Channel was bridged in 1899 and the Atlantic in 1001. To-day the British wireless industry employs 50,000 workpeople and has an annual turnover of £.'10,000,000. There are nearly 8,000,000 broadcast receivers in use in this countrv alone.
