MAXIM GORKY DEAD
NOTED RUSSIAN NOVELIST
(Reed. June 19, noon.) MOSCOW, June 18. The famous Russian novelist, M. Maxim Gorky, succumbed to-day to the illness from which he had been suffering for some \veeks.
Maxim Gorky, or Aleksei Maxinovitch Pyeshkov, was 67 years old. He published his first, sketch in 1892, and in 1893 established his position securely as one of the foremost of Russian writers. Many of his writings are regarded as reflections of his own hard life. His best characters are described as those which depict men in conflict with society who, by sheer force of personality, rise above its deadening influences. In 1905 he paid a visit to the United States in the cause of Russian freedom. Ifo returned to Europe and settled at Capri, returning to Kussia before the Great War and founding a review. He was a supporter of Russian Communism.
