NEW VESSELS ORDERED

Reed. 9.30 a.m. RUGBY, Juno 16. The Chamber of Shipping's index number of freight rates for May shows an increase of 3.09 per cent, compared with April, and 15.45 per cent compared with a year ago.
Another indication of the recent improvement in shipping is given by orders for high-speed cargo liners just placed. Two twin-screw turbine liners, each of 10,600 tons deadweight, for the South African Services of the Ellerman and Bucknall and Hall Lines are to be built by Cammell Laird and Co. at Birkenhead. Two turbine cargo liners, of 9800 tons deadweight, for the Indian services of the City and Hall Lines are to be built by Barclav and Curie on the Clyde, and two cargo liners, of 4300 tons deadweight, for the Mediterranean and Levant services of the Ellerman Papayaniki and Westcott and Laurance Lines are to be built by Gray and Company at West Hartlepool.
These orders are in addition to a cargo liner for the Lidian trade, and a fast passenger liner for the Bombay service, both under construction) on the Clyde for Ellerman Lines.
