PROTECTIVE MEASURES
(British Official Wireless.) Reed. 1 p.m. RUGBY, .Tune 15. Questioned about array and "naval movements in the Far East, the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, stated in tin; House of Commons to-day that routine measures for the protection of centres of British interest in the area involved in the present disturbed situa* lion had been taken. Those- measures consisted in holding in readiness at Hongkong a battalion for tho possible reinforcement of the British garrison at Shanghai, and in;the formulation of plans for the dispatch, in an emergency, of units of the China lleet lo the port affected. Mi', Eden would not answer a question based on the Hypothesis of SinoJapanese hostilities, except to say that every effort would be made to keep tho International Settlement at Shanghai free of nil hostilities.
