PAST GAME AT MATAWAI

(Herald Correspondent.) Motu scored a, six point victory over the Waikohu representatives in a fast game for the Black and White. Shield at Matawai on Saturday afternoon. The. teams were as follow :—Motu. — Murland', captain. Scholium, J. Grace, Lloyd, Befits, C. ; Q ; raee, Higgs, Donaldson, McLean, Taylor, Fox, Mortleman, Phillips. Jones and E. Whitehead. Waikohu. -- Swinbourne, captain, Ryland, , Seymour, Foley", Kiwha, Cullinane, Allen,, Newton, Robinson, Spence, Stewart, Newton, Dow, Gaukrodger and McTavish. Mr. R. Wilson refereed the, game. Motu won the loss and took advantage of Hie sun in the first half. Following the kick-off play was soon carried into Waikohu territory, past the 25yds line, where the visitors were hard pressed until a penalty brought the ball into mid-field again. After some solid rucking Spence got away with the ball and after a good run passed to Newton, who scored in the corner. DoWs kick failed.—Waikohu 3, Motu 0. The kick-off found Motu in tho Waikohu twenty-five, working hard to even the score. Phillips broke away with the ball at his toe and carried over to score. The kick failed. —Waikohu 3, Motu 3. The play .held in tho Motu twentyfive, the forwards of both sides being evenly matched at this stage.; A penalty, was' awarded to Waikohu and Kiwha'& kick went over.—Waikohu 6, Motu 3. Following some fast play on both sides, the ball being carried up and down the field in quick succession, the Waikohu hacks proved slightly better than the home side. At this stage Waikohu were unfortunate in losing two of their men, who suffered injuries. Spence wa« replaced by Ruru, and Ryland by Mcßae.

EXCHANGE OF KICKS Motu pressed hard on Waikohu's lino, but "Dovv'a kicking saved the .visitors. An exchange of kicks ended when Phillips broke away and carried tho bail back to Waikohu's twenty-live. .The heavier pack of. the home team were pressing their advantage and kept the ball iu their oppeWeftts' twenty-five until n free lack taken bv Scholium brought the score- to six-all. The visitors pressed hard on tho Motu line and Kiwha, made a good tun, but was checked by Murland. Half-time found .Motu in their own twenty-Ove, with Wajityohu working, hard for a scored The -Motu forwards kept the ball in. Waikohu's. twenty-five and only the superior handling of tho visitors' backs saved them l'r'oin trouble, until a penalty kick brought them into 'mid-field again." Loose play . .followed for some minutes until a penalty was awarded to Motu. A splendid kick by Scholium went over.—Motu 9, Waikohu 6.

Motu gave tha visitors small opportunity for retaliation, Jones, Phillips and ' Mortlenlait heiug prominent amongst tho forwards. Another free kick, taken by Bo'ets, went over and the score stood 12—-6 in favour of Motu. The home side continued to press hard until a. good run from halfway by Gaukrodger brought Waikohu into Motu's corner. It seeniod as if Waikohu might score again, but Motu kept them back, until the whistle went, emerging tho victors by six points. For Motu, Phillips was easily the best forward, while Scholium, Murland and Higgs played well in the backs., Kiwha was outstanding among the Waikohu forwards and Swinbourne, Newton and Gaukrodger amongst the backs.

Both .teams .wero lacking in team work, apd indulged in too much kicking throughout the game. Nevertheless, the match was one of the fastest and most interesting that has been played on the Matawai ground, .the selectors being satisfied with the display given by both sides. „■•, \ :::'■'■
