RUGBY LEAGUE

ENGLISH TEAM WINS

DEFEAT OF QUEENSLAND

HODGSON'S GOAL KICKS

iJiUoc. Till. Copyright—United Press Ansn.) BRISBANE:, June 13.

England defeated. Queensland by 19 points to 4 to-day in a Rugby League game, which, while not a brilliant spectacle, revealed the magnificent cover defence of the visitors and the consistency of Hodgson's goal kicking. Queensland were quite unable to make any headway against, the defence, their few opportunities falling down through faulty handling. Brogden cut through close' to the serum to score England's first, try, which Hodgson converted. The "baby of the team. Edwards, on the right- wing, completed a brilliant move initiated by Brough, when, he picked up from a- clever punt by Brogden and streaked for the line.

Brough. who gave a masterly display at fullback, was again in the picture, when he, co-operated with Belshaw and Walking to enable the winger Smith to score in the corner.

Hodgson's value to the side was shown bv his five goals, three ol which were well out from halfway.

In the first half, play was rather disappointing, England apparently being anxious to test the strength of the Queens-landers before giving anything away.

With the score at, 11 to A in their favour at half-time, however, and Edwards' try coming within a few minutes, they realised they had the game in their haniis. During the closing stages or play, the visitors exploited open football with their three-quarters, throwing the ball about, beautifully.

Brough often* chimed in, there being occasions when he. was right, in the forefront of the movements only a few feet from the line. He proved to-day that he is just as entertaining as Sullivan. The official figures give the gate at €2492 with the crowd of 23.684. The teams were :

England: J. Brough, A. Edwards, A .1. Risman. W. Belshaw. S. Smith. S. Brogden, W. Watkins. M. Bevorslcy, L A. Troup, M. Hodgson, N. Silcock, T Armitt, H. Woods. Queensland: W. Smith, 11. Robinson W. Mahon. J. R-eardon. L, Hudson. V. I ley. F. Gilbert, P. Madscn. -I. Little J. Law. L. lleidke. W. R.van. P. Hickey

Arkwright, chosen for the English team, had to drop out owing to :i leg injury. His leg was too sore to allow him to play.
