ARAB ATTACK
JEWISH SETTLEMENT VIOLENCE IN PALESTINE FIRING LASTS TWO HOURS TROOPS TO THE RESCUE (Elec. Tot. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. June 11, 10.50 a.m.; LONDON, June 10. A message from Jerusalem states that another battalion of British troops, bringing! the strength up to eight battalions, has arrived in Palestine. Bluejackets are guarding trains.
The. first determined Arab attack on Jewish settlements occurred near Armageddon to-day. The firing lasted for two hours, but the Arabs fled when British reinforcements arrived.
The Jerusalem correspondent of The Times says that the arrival of military reinforcements suggests that the Government will no longer court the moderating influence of the Arab leaders to restore order, but will depend primarily on the forcible repression of violence. Nevertheless it is doubted whether . military action alone will be capable of producing conditions in which the establishment of a Jewish national home can be continued satisfactorily.
There is ample evidence that genuine alarm has been created among all classes of Arabs by the rapid increase of Jewish immigration in recent years and, even admitting the effects of the agitation and intimidation, there is not the slightest doubt but that the present resistance to the movement is morally supported by the whole of the Arab population.
