OPOSSUM POACHER FINED
EGMONT NATIONAL PAEK BANGER'S PATIENCE Tramping through the bush in Egmont National Pafk recently a ranger, Mr. Gibson, came across an opossum trap set at the foot of a tree. He camped beside it all night, and early in the morning he found an opossum caught in another trap near by. About 3 o'clock a man came through the bush and when confronted by the ranger and taxed with poaching opossums he frankly admitted that he owned four traps. The poacher, Robert Ha ine, was fined 61 in the New Plymouth Court and was warned by the magistrate that a heavier fine would be imposed tor aliiy future offence. Mr. F. S. Grayling, who appeared for 'ihe prosecution, said that he had been asked to stress the seriousness of the offence. The Park Board believed that a great deal of poaching of opossum-! and! native birds was going on. and was determined to protect the fauna of the reserve, which was vital to Taranaki.
