A report, presented by the Imperial and Local Finance Committee mentioned that imports of manufactures into )!ritain increased by £7,C00.C00 during the past year, while exports showed no change.
One member said that the Dominions wore largely responsible. Australia, for instance, owing to (lie high import duties, was now producing for herself goods that she had previously secured from Krigland, and be was informed thai she had captured from (he .Mother Country most of the New Zealand market for non anil steel. The Dominions were allowed to send goods into England free of duty, hut English manufacturers were "taxed up to the eyes" if they sent .anything tn the colonies. Professor .1. (I. Smith, who presented the committee's report, said it was true that the greater proportion of the increase in imports came from the Dominions.
