RAISING OF SANCTIONS ALTERNATIVES OUTLINED ANTHONY EDEN’S REPLY MATTER FOR THE LEAGUE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 30, noon.) LONDON, May 29.

The Daily Mail’s political correspondent. says, that at. Signor Mussolini’s request the Italian Ambassador, Signor Grandi, visited the British Foreign Secretary, Dir. Anthony Eden, and intimated that if the League sanctions were continued Italy would have to consider her League membership and also the extent to which she could co-operate in the future settlement of European affairs. The lifting of sanctions would in the Italian Government’s opinion, relieve the present European situation and produce means for- stabilishing conditions and establishing peace which the Powers desired. Italy had no aggressive intentions. The restoration of good relations, between Italy and Britain was Signor Mussolini’s main objective.

Mr. Eden replied that while Britain desired to enjoy good relations with Italy, the raising of sanctions was a League matter. Nevertheless, he undertook to communicate Signor Grandi s statement to the British Cabinet.

A Geneva message says that Argentina requests the summoning of an extraordinary meeting of the League. Assembly in June on the ground that the situation is too critical to be dealt with by the Council alone. Argentina suggests that the agenda should include, sanctions, the annexation of Abyssinia, and the reform of the League Covenant.
