COMPULSORY UNIONISM
TIMBER TRADE AWARD COURT TO DRAFT CLAUSE {Per Prnss Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. An application for a new timber workers' award, .for the South Auckland, Taranaki and Wellington districts, was heard in the Arbitration Court to-day as the, outcome of an agreement at the conciliation proceedings at Palmerston North on May 6. Mr. Read, for tho North Island Timber Workers' Federation, brought under the notice of the court the matter of compulsory unionism. He said he had been in touch with the Minister, who told him that the amended Arbitration Act would be in operation almost immediately. Mr. Read informed the court thai he understood the compulsory unionism clause would eoiue into force about a month after the passing of the Act. lie wished that a clause be embodied in the new award. ■ ' "'■ Mr. Seed, representing the employers, said that those engaged in the conciliation proceedings appeared to wish to leave the drafting of the preference clause entirely to the court, so that the clause would be in compliance with the now legislation. Mr. Justice Page said the court would take time to .consider that point when the legislation went through, and would draw up a clause, in accordance with the legislation.
