SPEED TRIALS AWAITED
LINER QUEEN MARY INSURANCE iNEGOTIATIONS (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9.30 a.m. RUGBY, April 15. Late to-morrow afternoon Ihe liner Queen Mary will leave Southampton for her speed trials. It is believed in Southampton that she will have no difficulty in gaining the blue ribbon on, her first crossing of the Atlantic. Negotiations have started on the London market for insurance to cover the liner. The amount to be covered for the hull and machinery is £4,800,000. ■ GIANT TURBINES LARGE ENGINE-ROOM LONDON, March 4. Here are latest details of the three-storey-high white-walled hall where lie the turbines which will drive the liner Queen Mary over the Atlantic at more than 30 knots: Twenty-four boilers generate the steam at 4001 b. per square inch—about 27 times the pressure of the air around us. The same water will be used oyer and over again. It will be coaled after working the turbines by four tenormous condensers, and after ' undergoing a special water softening process will be returned to the boilers.
Lubricating oil at a rate of 108,000 gallons an hour will be pumped from the bottom of the ship and sprayed under pressure on every moving part. Used air will be drawn out at one end of the engine-room by four great fans, while pure air will be blown in at the other end by four similar fans. Unlike some other multi-funnelled liners which have dummy funnels, all three of the Queen Mary's funnels will be used to carry away smoke and gases from the furnaces.
