AIDS TO EDUCATION

FILMS AND RADIO INQUIRIES IN BRITAIN (Parliamentary Eeporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Films and broadcasting as educational aids were investigated, by Mr. N, T. Lambourne, the Director of Education, during his lengthy tour of Britain, America, Denmark and Australia, and he recommends the Minister of Education, in respect to films, that, before any school decides to incur expenditure, it should give consideration to whether films can be loaned, or have to be bought, and the purpose for which they may be used. Mr. Lambourne says that many teachers who have had long experience consider that silent films give the best results' as part of specific lessons, while, as a means of broadening details of knowledge and providing a background for lessons, sound films are considered the most suitable.

. Mr. Lambourne met the director of school broadcasting recently appointed by the British Broadcasting Corporation and discussed the possibilities of this system. As a result, he suggests that New Zealand should develop what is being done through the New Zealand Broadcasting Board. Mr. Lambourne considers that the time has probably arrived when each of the principal Stations should appoint an officer to work in conjunction ' with the existing committees to secure the greatest possible amount of technical perfection m patting lessons or talks on the air. All speakers should be adequately paid for their services and should bo required to rehearse and submit scripts as is done in London, separate broadcasts being provided for primary and post-primary schools.
