RUGBY SEASON

OPENING TO-MORROW SENIOR & JUNIOR GAMES Weather conditions are seasonable for the opening of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union's senior and junior grade competitions at the Oval tomorrow, and ground conditions also should be very much to the liking of the players. This is the first autumn for many years in which it has been possible to open the football season in April, without a grave danger of injury to players from contact with concrete-like ground surfaces, and the clubs and their members doubtless will make the most of their opportunities for early competition play.

The draw for the senior matches tomorrow will bring Celtic and Old Boys out together on No. 1 ground at the Oval, while Marist will meet H. 5.0.8. on the No. 3 ground. The third senior match drawn formally for to-morrow is that between Te Karaka and Y.M.P., but this fixture has been postponed at the request of the two .clubs concerned, which are not yet ready to field their teams, and will'be played later in the season if it is considered likely to affect the outcome of the competitions. The junior matches will he three in number, High School meeting Celtic on No. 2 ground, Old Boys A meeting Marist on No. 3, and Old Boys B engaging H. 5.0.8. on the grandstand arena.

The successes of the Celtic and Marist teams in the annual Easter tournament of the Marist Rugby Association, held in Gisborne, point to those teams being paramount in the senior competition under the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, with Celtic a shade the better of the two teams._ Mem bers of other clubs engaged in the senior ranks, however, are determined to give Celtic and Marist a battle for the honours, and probably these good resolutions will result in a general enlivening of interest in the national winter game in the Poverty Bay district.
