CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW
OPENING TO-MORROW The Poverty Bay Horticultural Society's chrysanthemum show opens at the City Hall at 3 p.m. to-morrow, a.nd according to present indications there should be a. wonderful display. The enthusiasm of local, growers of the national flower of Japan has resulted in the producing of some magnificent blooms. Jn the past few years the standard of exhibits has been equal to that of almost, any outside show. Despite the fact that a falling off in the number of growers, was expected this year, there promises to be a gratifying increase in competition and the committee is well pleased with the sustained interest.
At least three well-known growers, including one from llawke's Bay, have promised to compete for the society's cup for 12 varieties of chrysanthemums in the open class. A new cup. donated by Mr. and Mrs. John Barr, Hastings. is creating keen interest amongst entrants in the novice class.
Whilst chrysanthemums naturally will form the chief attraction in the show, the dahlia and other cut flower classes are well supported and should do much to compensate for the disappointment which followed the. abandoning of the society's dahlia show lasi month on account of the unfavourable weather conditions.
In its desire lo make the society's shows more important a>, social events, the committee has decided to delay the opening of this show unti" 3 p.m., a time, which, it is considered, should be more convenient, for Ihe majority nl patrons lo bo present. The judging of clirvsanlhenimn classes will he ill the hands'.»f Mr. E. Calcott, whilst Mrs. M. Martin will adjudicate so far as dahlias are concerned. Messrs. it. (i. Crawford and S. V. Tale will act as judges for the clil Mower and decorative classes respectively. An energetic ladies" committee is in charge of Ihe afternoon tea arrangements.
