Funny Man Roles
PHARLES Butterworth, who took the funny man role in "Magnificent Obsession," was induced to become an ador when, as a newspaper reporter he made a distinct hit in a comedy role in a Dress Club show. He was immediately offered a part in "Americana," and has been an actor ever since. Ail amusing story is told of Butterworth and Robert Taylor, .who played opposite Irene Dunne iu "Magnificent Obsession." In one of the scenes Taylor, a,patient in a hospital, is required to wear a hospital nightgown. He was unmercifully teased by Butterworth, who said, "I thought you were supposed to be a vory handsome young actor, but you certainly look a sight now. Wait till your public see you in that." But the situation was reversed a few weeks later when Butterworth found that his directors expected him to appear in an odd-look-ing old-fashioned night-shirt. In this scone, which takes place in a Paris hotel, Taylor immaculately dressed, discovers Butterworth trapped in a corridor. Before the real "take" Taylor shouted, "Well, well, well. How about your public? You don't look so good yourself in that, my boy!"
