An outbreak of fire in the residence of Mr. B. Wallace, at the. corner of Stout. and Sheridan streets shortly after noon to-day, was quickly quelled by the Gisborne Fire Brigade. The alarm was sounded at 12.33 p.m.. and the brigade was soon on the scene, to find that the (ire had originated about the mantelpiece, had spread up the chimney-breast, and had broken through into the roof, where, however, it had not gained a. proper hold when the brigade arrived. The prompt use of a hand chemical apparatus (piickly quelled the flames without resort, to the hose. The chimneybreast wag badly burned, but otherwise little damage was caused.
