THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING

The Gisborne Borough Council met last night. There were present • The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman. M.P., Crs. 11. H, DeCosta, N. H. Bull, J. H. Hall, H. ’ Holmes, G. Bradley Smith, H. E. Maude, D. S. Thompson,' ifnd P. Bushnelli Mr. J. Todrig Witty, acting 'town clerk, was present in place of the town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, who is on annual leave. The To Hapara School Committee wrote requesting that- Collins street should be continued through to Gladstone road in order to give a connection from Childers road and save a long distance by road for many pupils attending school. Many at present were obliged to walk through paddocks.—The Mayor said that the proposal was beyond the council’s resources at present, and the request was declined.

REPORTS WORKS COMMITTEE In its report the works committee stated : i “Engineer’s contemplated works.—A list of contemplated works for the fortnight was submitted by the engineer, the principal works being paving Clifford street, Fitzherbert street to Maclean street; Customhouse street, Childers road to Pitt street; trimming trees, Peel street; cutting noxious weeds, and cleaning drains and footpaths. The engineer reported that the intersection Kniti esplanade-Crawford road paving had been completed, but owing to the groove left beside the rails to take the wheel flanges, it was still dangerous to cyclists. Thu committee recommends that the' Gisborne Refrigerating Company be written to pointing out this danger, and suggesting that suitable filling pieces be placed in the groove or steps taken to eliminate the trouble. “Tar sealing Crawford road.—The committee recommends that this matter be held ' over for . consideration by tho estimates committee. “Footpath, Sheehan street.—A request for improvements to be effected to the footpath, Sheehan street, was considered by the committee, and it was decided that tho matter should he placed in the hands of the engineer for attention. “The Awapuni Scouring Works wrote asking for permission to lav a. drain from the company’s woolwash through the council’s plantation to connect with an outfall drain from the old East Coast fellmongery. The committee considers that if the drain was not laid in a workmanlike manner, possibly the trees in the plantation would be damaged. Your committee recommends that permission bo granted subject to they work beipg carried out to the satisfaction of the borough engineer.” WATERWORKS COMMITTEE “Cook Hospital water supply.—lt was decided that it be a recommendation from this committee ' that the council cannot accede to the request of the Cook Hospital Board for a flat rate basis of water supply in lieu of the present method by meter.” ENGINEER’S REPORT “Kaiti esplanade-Crawford road.—The laying of bitumen at the Kaiti esplanadeCrawford road intersection has been completed. Bad sections of the existing paving have been cut out and replaced in readiness for surfacing this road with Napier shingile. Clifford street, Fitzherbert street to McLean street.—Excavation and formation of foundation for hot mix paving are in band. “Footpaths. —Grey street: Bitumen paving of this footpath lias been completed with the exception of a wearing course on a small section which will be completed shortly. Peel street and Gladstone road Bitumen paving has been laid on portions of Peel street and Gladstone road in places where the old paving required renewing. General: Bitumen surfacing of various streets has been resumed and will be continued if weather conditions are suitable.” . Tho reports were adopted.
