Auckland with failing to show a stern light when being overtaken by the vessel Surrey in the Waitemala Harbour on the night of February 18. Mr. J. P. Elliot, who appeared foilin' harbourmaster. said that a collision had beeii narrowly averted. Mr. A. Moody, for defendant, said that he had been on the harbour for 25 years without anv convictions. A boy working with him had been lying down in the cabin and had turned off the light there in order to sleep, switching off the stern light, at the same time. A fine of C 5 and costs was imposed.
