MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE
THE COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE
MAYOR’S EXPLANATION
A further explanation of the Gisborne Borough Council’s attitude towards the golf club seeking t,o form links on the Park Domain was given by the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., nt the council meeting last night. His Worship said that one of the club members had gone out of his way to make an attack on the council, saying that the council had let him down. Mr. Colemaii said he was surprised at this, because each councillor had done his best to help the club. The Mayor then read a letter he had received from the Hon. F. Langstone, Minister of Lands, on the matter, the writer expressing the fear that if golf links were formed on the property, it might bar other sports organisations from using it. Mr. Coleman said, however, that he-had explained that n sufficient area was being reserved for other sports. The letter also stated that the Minister had written to Mr. Harris stating that Mr. Coleman had conferred with him (the Minister) on the matter, and adding that he did not think it probable that the £2OO loan would be granted. When a deputation from the golf club had waited on the council, the Mayor said, the council’s difficulty in this matter was explained to the deputationists, who were asked why the club did not arrange for guarantors to the hank, which would, advance the money, for it was explained that if, in the event of the guarantors withdrawing, each councillor would be personally liable for the repayment of the money. No reply had been received yet from the Unemployment Board in regard to the application for assistance, the Mayor added. “It is not the council that has let the club down,” Mr. Coleman added, ‘ ‘ and you can see from the Minister’s letter that I have not been idle.” Cr. D. S. Thompson: You have done all you can. It' was decided to write to the Unemployment Board asking for an urgent roph> to the application for assistance.
