The closing of the Macrae Rath, except during the warm week-ends until the end of the season, was agreed to by the Borough Council last night. The Mayor, Mix D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that in view of the unseasonable weather, it was not paying now to keep the bath open.

Seven building permits for work of an estimated total value of £1529 were granted by the Gisborne Borough Council dining the fortnight ended February 29. Two of the permits were for .dwellings valued at £1550, one for a workshop at £SO, three for alterations and additions estimated at. £IC9, and one for a motor shed at £2O.

If the Valuation Department finds itself able to undertake the work, it, is probable that new valuation rolls may be available in the Gisborne borough for the 1937-38 rating year. This advice was placed before the Borough Council last night in a brief note from the Valuer-General, Mr. W. Stewart, in reply to the council’s application for a revision of values in the borough.

Notice was received from Wanganui this morning by the secretary of the East Coast Rowing Association that the association's representative crew to take part in the eight-oar championships on the Wanganui River at Easter was scheduled to race at 1.30 p.m. The distance of the race is miles. The association will be represented at this regatta bv the Napier Rowing Club.

Two charges of theft and one of a breach of probation were brought against Roto Unuwai, aged 19, of Ngatapa, before Messrs. A. G. Beere and C. Blackburn, J.P.s, in the Police Court to-day. The accused was charged with, stealing £1 10s on February 1 and £3 10s on March 6 from Avon George Clifford. Oil the application of Senior-Sergeant W. Pender, the accused was remanded to appear on Monday.

Appearing before Messrs. F. W. Hunt and M. R.van, J.P.'s, in the To Araroa Police Court on Monday, Paiki Goldsmith was convicted and discharged on a charge of the theft of twine. On a charge of using indecent language, Solo Pariohe was convicted and fined £2, in default seven days in gaol. On a charge of disorderly conduct while drunk, Pariohe was convicted and discharged. An offer of £3O towards the cost ot erecting a suitable pavilion in. the middle of the Rutene road croquet lawns has been made to the Borough Council by Mr. W. Barrington -Miller. This wu: conveyed to the council last night in a letter from Mr. W. Hamilton Irvine, who stated that the roof of the building should be tiled. It was decided to write to Mr. Irvine, asking him to convey the council’s thanks to Mr. Miller, and that Mr. Irvine be conferred with regarding the erection of the building.Found sleeping by Constable Gedye in a railway carriage in the early hours of this morning, Albert Frederick Young appeared later before Messrs. A. G. Beere and C. Blackburn, J.P.s, in the Police Court, charged with being illegally on .premises. Senior-Sergeant W. Pender stated that Young bad a list of 54 previous convictions, and judging by his appearance could do with a clean up. Young explained that Ills missed bis bus to Muriwai, and had “to pull in somewhere.’’ The justices imposed a sentence of one month’s gaol. The average revenue earned by the Municipal buses during the fortnght ended March 1 was 11.22 d per mile. The fares and subsidies collected came, to £327 9s 3d, and 6916 miles were run. Passengers carried totalled 28,196. Reporting to the Gisborne Borough Council's meeting last night, the bus manager, Mr. K. G. Ball, stated that on February 24 during heavy rain, a bus was caught in tlie watertable while turning at Waintii Beach, resulting in the 4 p.m, and 4.30 p.m. trips being missed before the service could be restored. This delay would not. have occurred but for the fact that two buses were laid up at the time for repair, leaving no spare.

The withdrawal of Mr. Ben Dudfield as a candidate for the Gisborne Licensing Committee election was mentioned at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said the council appreciated Mr. Dudfield’s action. Mr. Dudfield was a sitting member, and was more than justified in going to the poll, but because there was one application more than required he withdrew his nomination and saved over £3OO election costs to the borough. This was greatly appreciated by the council and the ratepayers generally. Cr. H. 11. DcCosta endorsed the Mayor’s remarks, and said that Mr. Dudficld’s action was very sportsmanlike, more particularly ns lie was a sitting member and was almost assured of re-election.

The suspension of all new road work in the borough this season was agreed to by the Gisborne Borough Council last night. The Mayor, Mr. I). W. Coleman, M.P., said he proposed this action in view of the abnormal weather conditions. The council could well utilise the labour at present employed cn the roads in cleaning out drain's, which must he attended to. Accompanied by Cr. U. H. DeCosta and the borough engineer, Mr. EL R. Thomas, he visited the flooded (leLautour roaTI area during the rain on Saturday and saw a pitiful sight; they had to paddle through (lie wafer to make their inspection.
